I have to say I enjoyed this recipe, I made it for one of my clients, she's elderly and lives alone. So I cut back on the ingrediants. I think it made her day, having something hot cooking on the oven, and it smelled, well like "home!" She enjoyed telling me stories while I chopped and cooked. I did it on the stove also, I prefer to do all my cooking on the stove. My only change was I chopped everything very very small. It was great, I will definetly make this again! I loved the difference the searing the meat did!! Thanks!!

Nice basic stew recipe. Try adding a can of cream of mushroom soup to the pot as an added pleasure! I like to add a green veggie to this, green beans or peas work well for me (last 30 minutes). BTW, use ONLY a high quality balsamic when cooking! A nice variation would be to add a pint of red sauce, or a small can of tomato paste. Love and good luck to all!

This will stick to your ribs! I omitted the potatoes since I was serving it over noodles, but otherwise would include them. I did toss in some Baby Bellas, which I halved. My biggest change was to eliminate the butter and cut the olive oil back to 2 tbs and browning my meat in 2 batches. I used G'ma's old cast iron Dutch oven so after assembling all and bringing to temperature, I put it in a 275F oven for most of the afternoon. Thanks for sharing!

Followed the recipe to the T, except added a handful of chopped mushrooms! I did put in the crockpot after deglazing the pan & let cook on low for about 5 hours. Even my finicky 16 year old devoured it without picking all the veggies out. Definitely one to stay in my recipe box!

This is a different recipe for beef stew, than I have ever made. Really good flavors. I took advantage of a little red wine, to deglaze the pan, then added the beef broth. Don't skip the paprika, nice layers of flavor. This is a keeper.
04/10/2014
Best beef stew I've ever made! I added a bay leaf and some thyme, otherwise stuck to the recipe exactly. Will definitely be making again and again!
05/08/2015
I tossed everything into a crockpot on high for 4 hours (normally I do 8 low, but got a late start!) using my day before beef broth from another crockpot project, and let it do it's thing. I also added a can of Italian stewed tomatoes and towards the end a little tomato paste to thicken it up a bit. Definitely a 'set it and forget it' project for me!

This is an amazing beef stew. I seasoned the flour with Montreal steak seasoning, which I think helped the flavor of the beef, and added some peas in the last 10 minutes of cooking. Good stuff!
11/23/2015
Good recipe with good flavor. ONE HUGE PROBLEM THOUGH! If you double or triple the recipe, DO NOT double or triple the butter and olive oil used to brown the beef! It does not mention this in the recipe, but it makes the stew taste greasy!
01/05/2014
Just made the slow simmer beef stew and it is amazing!! I added cut up potatoes to the recipe instead of using noodles. So glad I tried this recipe. It will become a winter staple in our home!
02/20/2013
This recipe was fantastic! I made it according to the recipe for a ski weekend with another couple. It was perfect! Everyone loved it! I have been struggling to find a stew that doesn't taste boring or rather plain and this is it!!
01/03/2015
perfect. I also used a crock pot. The taste is just unbelievable .
12/06/2014
This is the best beef stew I have ever had!!! The only changes I made -used cornstarch instead of flour, used 1tsp balsamic vinegar, and I added quinoa before adding the veggies. I simmered it for three hours and it was soooo yummy!! Thx for this recipe :)
10/10/2014
Great recipe... Got rave reviews
03/19/2015
Very glad I tried this recipe!

I have made this twice now, and I had to take the time to review it this time because I was reminded of how wonderful it is! I did not make any big changes at all. I use fresh garlic instead of the powder, and about an hour before it's done I use a couple tablespoons flour with a little corn starch mixed with a small amount of warm water to get it to desired thickness. I do end up adding more balsamic vinegar and worcestershire to make it even more luscious and hearty. I get the stew meat from Central Market (I live in Dallas) and they use use scraps of filet and other premium cuts of meat, so oh my goodness!! It is one delicious dish!!!
03/10/2014
We loved this! Didn't change a thing.
04/25/2017
BIG hit! I used a bag of mixed vegetables in it as well as a couple of bay leaves. Very yummy!
10/09/2014
I added green beans, a bit of sea salt and pepper, and a tad more Worcester Sauce. Hit with everyone. Prep time took WAY longer than listed for someone that doesn't cook as often, but worth it.
03/09/2014
This turned out really well. Didn't change much at all and served it on egg noodles...very tasty and satisfying.
07/19/2018
I made a few minor changes by using fresh garlic and herbs, but really the ingredient that makes this shine is the balsamic. It adds just a touch of sweetness that brightens it up just enough. I don't have a sweet tooth and would never think of adding balsamic, but to me, it's the key ingredient! Bravo!
02/22/2019
Really great flavor!!! I only had 1 1/2 # stew meat, used about 1/2 the vegetables and beef broth. I did use all the spices called for, saved the recipe and it will be my go-to stew recipe from now on!
05/24/2018
I never made stew before, but I will be making it again. This was a lot of work, but so very worth it.
11/30/2018
Best beef stew ever! I used 1 can beef broth and 1 can petite diced tomatos. No celery, just cause I didn't have any, and no vinegar. Cooked on the stove. Served with French bread.
09/03/2018
My husband loves stews. He thought this was delicious and it was even tastier the next day.
10/10/2018
Very good beef stew! It was a little soupy, but I was able to add a flour mixture in to help thicken it up. Next time we plan. on adding wild rice and cream of mushroom soup to kick it up a notch.
01/22/2018
Amazing! I did reduce the oil and butter down to about three tablespoons total. I added red along with regular baking potatoes, portobello mushrooms in place of 1 cup of the celery, but otherwise made as written and it was so so good. Fiance and kids loved it too! It's going in the cookbook and the cold weather rotation for sure :)

Made this exactly as the recipe states with only the addition of 2 Bay leaves. I seared the meat in a skillet, sauted the onions as well then added that to the crackpot. I deglazed the skillet and added that as well. 1 hr before it was done I did add a couple tablespoons of cornstarch mixed in water to the crackpot to thicken this up. IT IS GLORIOUS! THE best stew, fully of flavor...I just can't say enough of this stew. It has replaced my old recipe and will use this going forward.
04/03/2019
Great recipe. Would never think to add vinegar to stew, but it gives it a nice tangy taste. I skipped the butter and it was delicious!
05/29/2019
This recipe is a family favorite! We pressure cool moose and add 1 tsp onion salt, 1 tsp garlic salt. Delicious!
02/07/2019
Great flavor combination
04/13/2020
It was easy to prepare and it was delicious!
04/23/2020
I've never made beef stew, but I had some random leftovers, so I thought I'd give it a try. Really great flavor! Loved the balsamic vinegar - I think that's the key ingredient. Spices and seasonings were to measure, but the meat and veggies were what I had on hand, so may not have been exactly 2 pounds meat, or 6 cups carrots, etc. After cooking the beef and onions (and a little garlic) in the pan, I added the rest of the beef broth and the veggies to a crockpot instead. Pan mixture added after deglazing, and cooked on high for 3 hours. Then left on warm for several more hours until I got home and could eat. My husband and I both enjoyed it.
11/04/2017
Delicious! It is now my "go to" stew recipe.
09/09/2018
Made as written and it was awesome! What great flavor! Thank you for this submission!
02/23/2015
This was absolutely delicious! I did have to modify just a bit - omitted the parsley, fewer carrots, and Knorr boullion instead of canned broth. This is definitely a new family favorite! Thank you for sharing!
03/11/2018
This was a WINNER!
06/21/2017
Loved this recipe! Don't know what's so special about it, but it works! I have made beef stew countless times, but this recipe turned out so well. I made everything to the tee, except I used fresh thyme and dried oregano for herbs because that's all I had. I'm thinking the balsamic vinegar was the key.
01/02/2019
Love the depth of flavor. Definitely will make again.
02/04/2019
This was excellent. Boyfriend gave it 4.5 stars, which is pretty good for him. I made 1/2 of the recipe with some tweaks, as follows: - used 2 small canned potatoes (saved peeling time) - Used 1/2 small onion, leaving it in big pieces (boyfriend doesn't like onion) - Put Montreal steak seasoning in flour mixture before adding beef (did not use seasoned salt). Saved remaining flour to thicken it up at the end - Added 1 bay leaf - Added red cooking wine after an hour of cooking - Used gravy master instead of the Worcestershire, since we don't like that flavor - added a little bit of fresh pepper Note to self: boyfriend asked for more beef and less carrots next time (there was a lot of carrots)
03/30/2014
Our family loved this stew! A hit all around
09/22/2016
I used a cubed turnip instead of potatoes and tossed in a pack of Knorrs onion soup mix for fun. Also added some Montreal Steak Spice when I browned the beef up. Served it up for dinner with some crusty Italian bread & everyone loved it !
06/12/2015
Follow the recipe as fat as ingredients were concerned. I only used 4 cups of beef broth which covered everything. Best stew I have ever made. Thanks for sharing!
01/25/2017
My guy said this was the best stew he ever had. It was great. I added mushrooms because I had some. I also added a pkg of Onion Soup. Based on another review I stirred in one can of Cream of Mushroom at the end to thicken it. Even better the next day
03/16/2015
Great recipe! Added seasoned salt to the flour mixture to coat the beef. Served over rice, and it's always a hit.
04/15/2016
Absolutely delicious. However it only took 2 hours for everything to be cooked. If I left it longer the veggies would be mush. I am still giving 5 stars.
02/26/2017
Cooked in a crock pot for 4 to 5 hrs on high. Added some montreal steak seasoning instead of seasonall to flour. Sliced portabella mushrooms. Used 4 Tsp of corn starch toward the end to help thicken it up.
10/27/2020
Nice beef stew. I only used half the amount of beef broth and I had plenty of gravy ! The whole amount would have turned this into a soup .. My stew was ready in 2 1/2 hours. I served with biscuits.
06/08/2021
I made this last night and it was delicious! Even my picky eater bragged about it. I forgot that it was a slow cooker dish and by the time I remembered it was too late to cook it that way. I decided I would have to use a pressure cooker. I have a large old Presto that is frying pan size so was able to brown the meat in it. My package of stew beef was smaller than two pounds so I adjusted the vegetable quantities down. I left the potatoes whole since they would be in the pressure cooker the entire cycle. I only used 4 cups beef broth but kept the amount of seasonings as called for. When I was done with the pressure cooker I scooped out the meat and veggies and used what was left of the seasoned flour to thicken the gravy. This was an EZ and delicious recipe and I highly recommend it!

This is a fantastic beef stew recipe! I don't ordinarily make a stew in summer, but a friend of mine had purchased small red potatoes, and was surprised (and dismayed) she received a bag of the teeny dark red potatoes. I could not figure out what else I could put them in. Was going to put this in the crockpot but decided to just do it on the stove top- still getting adjusted to cooking/baking with electric.? As many folks have commented, the balsamic vinegar and Worcestershire sauce were surprising additions and really gave it a much deeper flavor! The only thing I switched up was adding a bunch of crushed raw garlic??. Thank you for posting such a delicious stew that I will add to my recipe collection!?
09/27/2017
This is phenomenal, even with half the amount of oil and butter called for. I added half a packet of Lipton beef stew seasoning to the flour, and some extra veggies, but otherwise stuck to the recipe. So delicious, thank you!
10/09/2016
I will definitely make this again! We added dumplings at the end, but it is very good with or without.
11/13/2016
This was fabulous! My husband loved it, and I will definitely be making this again. I did thicken the juice to make a gravy.
08/01/2016
Loved this recipe. I cup the recipe in 1/2. I added 1 cup of hearty red wine and 1 bay leaf. Added a little cornstarch to thicken. My new favourite beef stew recipe.
11/27/2016
I had been craving beef stew and didn't want to get the 'canned' kind. This was a really easy recipe and definitely a keeper! Thank you!
02/16/2021
This recipe is excellent! The only change I made was to use green beans instead of celery. Definitely give it a try, and thanks for sharing
02/09/2015
Delicious!!!
02/02/2015
Outstanding beef stew recipe. This is a keeper.
01/24/2015
This was absolutely delicious. The only thing I did different was add portabella mushrooms. Followed the recipe exactly other than that. Wonderful!!
10/09/2016
This is the best beef stew recipe I have tried. It tasted so beefy and flavourful!
01/21/2019
I did make this in the slow cooker after I had browned the beef and onions on the stove. It was a tasty stew but I made some changes , I added fresh dill and tomato paste near the end to add more flavour and to thicken. A wonderful recipe.
03/16/2018
This beef stew is really good, my sister raved about it. I added potatoes and peas but followed the rest of the recipe. I will definitely make this again!
09/20/2015
Absolutely love it! I have been using this recipe for 3 years now (minus the vinegar) and it gets rave reviews. This will be the only beef stew recipe I will ever use again!
04/18/2019
Sorry thought this was very bland
08/27/2015
Followed the recipe exactly except for a few things because I did not have them on hand. I used only half of what the recipe called for since I only had 1 lb. of stew meat. Replaced all purpose flour with wheat all purpose flour. Used Italian seasoning instead of just basil. Fajita seasoning in place of seasoned salt. No worchenshire sauce. I'm sure it would have tasted better with it. Had no garlic powder so I used 4 cloves of fresh minced garlic in the last minute after adding the onions. Regardless of the changes, it turned out so delicious. My toddler loved it because it was so tender.
03/12/2017
I dislike beef stew, but the hubs loves his beef, so I tried this minus the potatoes (we prefer mashed) , and I have to say this was absolutely delicious. I mean delicious, seriously delicious. I've made it at least 5 times for Sunday supper. I too used the crockpot after deglazing. Did I say this was delicious? No, really.
04/29/2017
I usually use the name brand package of beef stew seasoning. I forgot to buy it and my husband wanted beef stew. I'm so glad I found this recipe. It's perfect.
01/18/2022
Made this stew; it was tasty but since there are only two of us, I did not use the full amount of broth. It would be really helpful if the originator of this recipe would give guidance for cooking for only 2 people.
02/13/2021
This is fantastic! So easy to double, triple or quadruple recipe for a large crowd. I never have changed a thing and I have made this recipe for years!
11/04/2020
I did not have any beef broth so I used 2 pkgs of brown gravy mix with 3 cups of water. Also I did not have balsamic vinegar so I used red wine vinegar. The end results were amazing. Put it in a crockpot and supper in 3 1/2 hours. Very easy to make and tasted fantastic.
01/18/2019
This was delicious. Not a big fan of leftovers so I cut the recipe in half (except for the beef broth). Turned out great!
10/24/2017
I used a sirloin roast and cut it up. Added a can of golden mushroom soup.
10/01/2017
I have never attempted to make a beef stew. After looking through a lot of recipes, I decided on this one. I followed the directions exactly as written and it was wonderful! I will definitely make this again! Thank you for sharing this.
10/16/2018
This is my second favorite recipe I've found in this site (my wife's too). !! I add bay leaf (personal preference) and it's really really good. Once I didn't have enough broth and tried adding apple cider to give it a nice fall taste....don't do that it made it bitter lol
11/07/2017
I like other recipes I've tried from this website better. This is more of a beef soup than a stew. I prefer a thicker, creamier broth.
01/31/2019
Oh goodness! I cut the broth to 7 C, but added a 15 oz can of diced tomatoes, juice included. This stew is thinner than what we are used to, but so delicious, and with added biscuits just about perfection.
10/09/2016
I will definitely make this again! We added dumplings at the end, but it is very good with or without.
10/01/2017
I have never attempted to make a beef stew. After looking through a lot of recipes, I decided on this one. I followed the directions exactly as written and it was wonderful! I will definitely make this again! Thank you for sharing this.
04/29/2018
I just added some more garlic, thyme, and a bay leaf. Came out great!
01/28/2018
Most tasty stew I've had in a long time. I added a drained can of peas at the end just because i like peas in stew. Delicious!!
10/19/2019
I mad this rec
02/24/2020
worst beef stew ever! I was skeptical about the vinegar but put in anyway.
10/24/2017
Our family loved it. Especially since all the vegetables came from our garden. This recipe is a great end of growing season meal. I love that it didn't have tomatoes in it.
01/16/2018
Have had better but good. Cooked and seasoned meat ahead then chopped and placed all vegs in pot together as time will cook them nicely. May cook and add pasta after..taste along the way.
08/06/2016
Good stuff. I only had a pound of stew meat, so I halved the amount of butter, olive oil, broth and veggies, but still used the same amount of flour and seasonings. That made the sauce a little thicker and gave it plenty of flavor, didn't make it come out over-seasoned. Didn't serve it over anything. Just with French bread on the side. Love the one pot method. I'll make this one again.
01/18/2019
I didn't change a thing! I like no tomatoes hence less heartburn for me. Great flavors!
02/04/2019

My family thought this was excellent! Will definitely make again.
02/02/2017
